It was the most beautiful and luxuriant ocean liner ever built and it was huge.  It was a technological marvel; a tribute to the abilities of the great minds of the day.  It was the Titanic and it was supposed to be unsinkable.

          The Titanic slid into the sea on an April morning one hundred years ago.  She was the pride of England.  She sailed for New York and among her passengers were the wealthy and elite of the world as well as thousands of ordinary folks hoping for a new life in America.  In the dark, early morning hours of April 15, 1912, an iceberg tore a huge gash in her hull.  At that moment, her doom was set and her neck was in the noose.  Within two hours the Titanic sunk beneath the cold waters of the North Atlantic taking fifteen hundred folks to their death.

          "Not even God can sink the Titanic" was the boastful statement of the ship's designer.  This statement is found among similar ones throughout history.  John Lennon said of the Beatles, "We are more popular than Jesus".  Nekita Krushchev said, "Gegarin flew into space and didn't see any god there," during his speech to Central Committee of the Communist Party.  King Nebuchadnezzar stood on his palace roof and said, "Is this not the great Babylon which I have built?"

          The Bible admonishes us with this truth:  "Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall."  Prov. 16:18
